Getting your life insurance license, step by step
From zero to licensed in two to four weeks. What to study, what it costs, and the mistakes that slow people down.

You can't sell life insurance without a license from your state's department of insurance. Every state runs its own version of the process, but the shape is the same everywhere, and most of our recruits finish inside a month. Here's the sequence.
1. Pre-licensing education
Most states require a set number of pre-licensing hours (commonly 20 to 40) before you can sit for the exam; a few, like Texas, have dropped the hour requirement but still expect you to pass a test that assumes you studied. Either way, take a course. Online self-paced courses run $100 to $250, and the good ones include practice exams, which is where the actual learning happens. Plan on 20 to 40 hours of study.
2. Schedule and pass the exam
The exam is administered by a testing vendor (Pearson VUE or Prometric, depending on the state) at centers in every major metro, and many states now offer online proctoring. Expect a fee of roughly $40 to $150 per attempt. Register for the Life exam, or Life, Accident & Health if you want to add health products later. Scores are pass/fail and you get them on the spot.
3. Fingerprints and background check
Nearly every state requires a fingerprint background check, usually through IdentoGO or a similar vendor. Schedule it online, show up with ID, and it's done in ten minutes. About $40 to $60.
4. Apply through NIPR or your state portal
Submit your license application online, typically through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) or the state's own system. Fees run about $50 to $200. Answer the background questions honestly. A past issue isn't automatically disqualifying, but lying about one is. Most states issue the license within one to three weeks of a clean application.
5. Get appointed
A license lets you sell; an appointment lets you sell a specific carrier's products. Once you're licensed, Unleash submits your contracting paperwork to our carriers. Allow one to two weeks. You'll also need errors and omissions (E&O) insurance, which we'll help you set up.
Total cost and timeline
| Step | Typical cost | Time |

We'll point you to the right course and exam vendor for your state on your intro call, and tell you the exact numbers before you spend anything.
